Flavour of the week in F1

It's an ice cream fun-filled week in F1! Our very first ice cream parlour has just opened and we have been selling dozens and dozens all week!

Aside from a wide selection of ice cream flavours like strawberry, mint, vanilla and chocolate, you can also choose if you want your ice cream in a bowl or in a cone. We also offer ice lollies which are equally delicious!

The children have been particularly very good at selling ice cream, using phrases and sentences such as 'What flavour do you want?', 'in a bowl', 'in a cone', 'Money, please!', 'How much?' and more. They have also been using colours to describe flavours and money names such as penny, pence and pounds.  Gianna always sells the ice cream for 10 pounds! She even sold ice cream to Ms Sue and Ms Grace and both said that they are too expensive!

The children have also been ringing the bells and calling out 'Ice cream anyone?' as they sell in the ice cream parlour. What great sellers we have!

In the malleable area, we have made an ice cream dough! It turned out very soft and smelt really good too!

Here's the recipe for the ice cream dough:

For our workshop area this week, we have made two activities which the children enjoyed!

Ms Precious helped the children make their ice cream sundaes with cotton, paper cups, glitter and coloured glue for the syrup toppings! Everyone had their preference as to what colour they will use and how big will their ice cream be!

One more workshop activity is puffy paint ice cream! This activity was also part of our ICT provision this week as we used the microwave to cook our puffy paint. With support, the children had a go at painting their ice cream stencils and pressing the buttons on the microwave. Some children had a go at this activity a lot of times that they were able to operate the microwave independently afterwards! Well done!

This is a fun activity and the change in texture after putting it in the microwave is what interests the children the most! You can try this recipe at home:

Yesterday, we had a parachute game in the classroom. We all had fun moving the parachute up, down and round and round! The children had a great time shaking the parachute too and keeping the ball from falling off. Good listening skills were observed and we are very proud of all the children for that!

Also this week, Ms Precious showed a video of how ice creams are made. The children were very good at naming the ingredients and the flavours they saw! I think we all got hungry after watching the video clip!

A big well done to all the children for a fantastic week!
You did amazing!

Newsletter 22.5.2015

We had a FUNtastic week in F1! The children were still roaring and stomping as we carried on with our topic on Dinosaurs! The children enjoyed the workshop area the most. We prepared puffy paint and some dino colouring sheets so the children could unleash their creativity! They were asked to choose what dinosaur they would like to paint and the colour they prefer. The children were very good at sharing their paint pots and making sure that they don't mix up the colours. The most exciting part for them was putting their artwork inside the microwave and pressing the buttons. They had to wait for a minute before they could get a hold of their artwork again and they patiently waited for their turn. They learnt how to be cautious as they used the phrases, "be careful", "it's hot", and "move back (from the microwave).”

We focused on shapes and counting for maths. Ms Thuy prepared a dinosaur game for the children to play in the IWB. The children were excellent in identifying the shapes, colours, types of dinosaur, and the number of dinosaurs in the picture. Ms Christine also showed us a flip book entitled, “Harry and His Busy Day” which focused on shapes that we see around us such as a diamond kite, a square box of chocolates, and a circular wheel among others.

We noticed that the children have widened their imagination through the toys in the construction area. They continue on building their own duplo jungles and houses. They also kept baby dinosaurs inside the stickle brick spheres and imagined that the dinosaur egg will hatch and that a baby dinosaur will pop out soon. Some children also used the spheres as noodle bowls. Furthermore, the children worked hand in hand in building a bridge out of big legos and carefully balanced their way from start to finish.

Mr Sun has been shining brightly these days and it makes our children more excited to go swimming! We had so much fun in the splashpool with Ms Trinh this week. The children played with watering cans and water wheels inside the pool. We are pleased to observe that our children are becoming more confident in putting their faces and bodies in the water, kicking their legs and using their arms in swimming! Keep it up F1!

We have been having so much fun in the Fundino Playground and in the Soft Play Room. The children have been pretending to sell ice cream in different flavours! They turned one of the soft blocks into an ice cream stand. They have been asking their teachers and friends questions such as, "What flavor do you want?", "What's your order?" and "How much?"  In the playground, the children put some beanbags inside the road cones and pretended to sell them as ice cream to their friends and teachers. They do the same with sand and water in the mudkitchen and in the sandpit. It seems like the children are interested in having an ice cream parlor in the classroom pretty soon. Yum, yum!

In the library, Ms Christine told the story of The Gingerbread Man. The children were very attentive as some even tried to predict what might happen next. Danny even thought a crocodile would come to eat the gingerbread man! They pretended to run after the gingerbread man and said, "Stop! Stop!" Afterwards, the children had a go at choosing a book to borrow for the week.

To cap off the week, we had a Dinosaur Egg Hunt. Ms Precious hid the dinosaur eggs we made in class in the different areas of the Fundino Playground. Ms Crislet said that last night, dinosaurs came to our school to play in the playground but they forgot to collect their eggs before leaving. The children enjoyed looking for the eggs and sharing them with their friends.

We showed the children videos and photos of the recent earthquake that hit Nepal. Whilst watching, we heard different notable reactions from the children: "The house fell down,” "The people are scared, they are running,” "The grandmum is sad because she lost her things," "If the ground is shaking, the hospital is shaking too,” "The ground cracked," "The tree is shaking," "The water come out of the pool."  Given by their reactions, we agreed to extend our helping hands to the victims of the earthquake by generously donating our old books and sharing them with our friends at the EYFS Book Sale. The children were very happy with their new books. We would like to express our gratitude to our dear parents for your generosity and positive response to this event.

NOTICES:

  • Please return library folders on or before Wednesday  so your child can continue borrowing a library book on that day.
  • We discourage the use of shoes with shoelaces as we encourage the children to put their shoes independently. Strap ons and sandals are ideal. No Crocs too as these make the children trip easily especially whilst they run outdoors.
  • Swimming: As we are now on the last term of the school year, we would like all children to swim regularly every Tuesdays and Thursdays. This will enhance your child's water confidence and will also prepare him/her for F2.  As a school policy, if your child is in school then he/she is well to join in the swimming sessions. We are then going to lend your child our extra swimsuit and towel and will let your child join in our splash pool if your child has no swimming kit. This is also a practise in F2. If your child is ill, please provide a medical certificate excusing him/her to join the splash pool session.
Hoping for your cooperation on these.Thank you very much! Well done to our children for being active and fantastic this week!  You all deserve an amazing weekend!  :)

Newsletter 15.05.2015

This week was full of STOMPING, CHOMPING and ROARING as the children discovered more about dinosaurs. Apart from identifying the spiky, swimming and flying dinosaurs, They have started to expand the way they describe dinosaurs by adding size vocabulary such as small, medium, big, long, short, and tall. We have been observing them play and we are glad to hear them trying to say long words like triceratops, tyrannosaurus rex, and brachiosaurus as well as 2-3 word phrases such as baby flying dinosaur, big spiky dinosaur, small triceratops, and long tail dinosaur to name a few. We are pleased to see most of our F1 children continuously improve their communication skills towards their teachers and friends.

Our dinosaur den role play area is still very popular with the  children as they continue to explore our jungle and find the dinosaurs. They pretended to be explorers as they used binoculars and rode the dino tram. They also started hiding around the trees as some children dressed up and pretended to be the dinosaur.

In the workshop/creative area, children learnt further that baby dinosaurs come out of a dinosaur egg. They created their own dinosaur eggs using mudrock plaster and balloons. They got a chance to choose the colour of their balloon and used the mudrock strips to cover up the balloon. The children had to do it with their teacher and they were very good at showing that they can patiently wait for their turn.

In the Maths area, the children sorted out dinosaur counters into colour sorting trays. They also identified whether the dinosaur is long necked or spiky. Ms Christine also came up with a board that asks children: “What is your favourite dinosaur like?” They then sort out the spiky, flying and stomping land dinosaurs into their corresponding sizes: small, medium or big.  The children enjoyed identifying the dinosaur photos whilst making sure they take turns with their friends.

The children also liked playing in the construction area. They have been building a jungle using dinosaur duplo. They also used stickle bricks to make dinosaurs and other things that they see around them. The children have been saying sentences like, “I made a tree” and “I am building a house” as they play and show what they have created.

In the investigation area, the children played with land dinosaurs on soil. They picked up the dinosaurs and made them stomp on the ground. They also identified the colours, kind and sizes of the different dinosaurs on the tuff spot. We have added plants and a volcano model to give them an idea of how the world looked like a long, long time ago. The children pretended to feed the dinosaurs with the natural resources that we have in the classroom.

During library time, Ms Crislet read the book, ‘A Dinosaur Called Tiny’ which talks about a dinosaur who may be very tiny but has a very big heart. The tiny dinosaur was teased for being very small but turned out being able to save a big dinosaur’s life. Aside from listening to a story, the children had a wonderful time choosing the book that they will borrow for the week!

We have been learning a new song with Mr Robbie called ‘I Like Bananas’. This is the song we’re using for our performance at the end of this term.

I like bananas, I like watermelon
I like plums and cherries too.
I like oranges, I like apples
I like plums and cherries too.

We will continue learning more about dinosaurs next week. Have a wonderful weekend! Roar!
